Rare Civil War Confederate Telegram—Atlanta Mayor Order Whitaker Rifles to March:
$375.00

In this October 23, 1861, telegram Atlanta Mayor Jared Whitaker asks Georgia Governor Joseph E. Brown to postpone the marching orders for the Whitaker Volunteer company. The telegram is written on a rare pre-printed form for the Milledgeville and Macon Telegraph Line. The message reads:

Dated, Atlanta Oct 23d 1861
To Governor Brown

Sir
The Whitaker Volunteers in Col. Neely’s Regiment ordered to march Friday. Will you extend the time to Monday or Tuesday next?
Jared Whitaker

Whitaker had been elected mayor in 1861 after defeating three-term mayor William Ezzard. He served only a short time, resigning in December 1861 to join Governor Brown’s administration as commissary general of Georgia’s state troops. Whitaker’s company was part of the 4th Georgia State Troops, a unit that doesn’t seem to have completed its organization. Many men assigned to the 4th ended up in other Georgia units such as Cobb’s Legion and the 56th Georgia.

The telegram measures about 5” x 7 3/4” and is in very good condition with even toning and creases at the original folds.
