Revolutionary War Officer\'s Short Sword Soligen Blade from Rhode Island Estate:
$475.00
Fresh out of a Rhode Island estate. A Revolutionary War officer\'s short sword with a Soligen made German blade. Very Good condition with pitting at the tip of the blade. The \"D\" guard has been broken off. The break is period (not modern). The guard is slightly loose from the loss of the original leather spacers which are almost never present on an original 18th century sword hilt. The staghorn grip is very tight and the sword overall is solid and secure. The blade measures 22\" x 1 1/8\" wide at the forte with a very well cut fuller running down the first 16\" of the blade on both sides. The last 5\" of the blade is double edged and made to cut both ways. The stampings on the blade show the crescent moon, which indicates the \"Cult of Mary\" and the 3 stars are representative of Orion\'s Belt from the constellation \"Orion the Hunter\". The Cult of Mary symbol was established in the middle ages and the 3 stars symbol of Orion\'s Belt has been the soldier\'s symbol for many thousands of years. The relief designs on the sword guards and pommel are representative of Orion the Hunter showing scenes of a large near eastern lion attacking a stag and dogs and their ancient hunter \"Orion\" hunting a wild boar on the small cross guard and on the pommel. The dogs are the 2 dogs of Orion which are in the constellation Canis Minor. George Washington\'s coat of arms also displays the 3 stars Orion symbol. The blade stampings are on both sides of the blade. A sword found on the Bunker Hill battlefield has the same Soligen stamps and you can see it on Reddit by searching \"Bunker Hill battlefield Museum Sword\". Rhode Island was as much a participant in the revolution as Massachusetts. Their very large militia was very effective in the revolution. This is a service grade blade made for close quarter combat in the last quarter of the 18th century. It is not a gentleman\'s hunting sword.
