Throughout US history, family and loved ones have prayed for the safety of their family members at war and in the military. While the government provided soldiers with armaments and ammunition, spiritual protection was often provided by the family in the form of miniature bibles and prayer books, sized to be carried in uniform shirt pockets. During WWII and throughout the Korean War, these miniature bibles often came in the form of “Heart Shield Bibles”. They were durable and made for the battlefield with steel front covers alleged to stop a bullet. They were a source of strength, moral encouragement and connection for many GIs.

This item shown here is a Heart Shield Bible, New Testament,4⅝"×3" x ¾”, dating from the Korean War. It was given to a US Army Corporal as a symbol of love, support and faith by his fiancé, though it bears no inscription. It includes a steel cover with a gold-tone finish and the etched title, “May This Keep You Safe From Harm”. The bible was printed in the United States by the Know Your Bible Company of Cincinnati Ohio.

This historical item would make a great addition to a militaria collection. The inscription on the steel cover is easily read, though the cover shows a few signs of wear and corrosion consistent with use and age. The binding of the book is in good condition and fairly supple. It bears small friction marks and a slight linear indentation on the back cover (see photo). The book features bright red-edge-painting.
