Soviet Badge of a Participant ofa 10-Day Festival of Soviet Autonomous Republic of Karelia in Moscow, 1959.

This is Guaranteed 100%ORIGINAL piece from 1959, not a recent issue or a replica!

The badge is made in gildedbrass and high quality “hot baked” enamels; measures 35.7 mm x 16.7 mm. Thewriting in the center is “Dekada of Karelian Arts and Literature”.

The badge is in GREATcondition. The enamel has only tiny contact marks, no flaking, chips or othersignificant wear. The original gilt finish is clearly visible. The pin attachment is intact and fullyfunctional.

This badge was issued to amember of a series of events showcasing Karelian culture, literature and artsin Moscow in 1959. The festival was called “dekada” in Russian; it resembles anEnglish word which sometimes leads people to translate it incorrectly asDecade, but in fact it referred to a ten-day span of the festival. There wereother “dekadas” held in the late 50s for other Soviet republics, and there wasa special badge issued for each of them.

These Khrushchev era badges arenicely made and fun to collect! The Karelian badge is especially interestingbecause the population of Karelia in the Russian northwest was relativelysmall, and the republic had just been downgraded recently from the full-fledgedSoviet Republic within the USSR to a lesser Autonomous Republic within RussianFederation.
