U.S. M1 Vietnam Issued Combat Helmet with Cover:
$275.00
This is with a heavy heart that I list this, but I am cleaning out from my Dad's estate and I am downsizing my living situation. This is the helmet that he was issued and wore during his tour in Vietnam from 1970 to 1971 with the United States Air Force. He was with the Security Forces guarding Danang Air Force Base. I included a picture of him wearing it on post. The hard copy of the picture will not be included in this sale, just the helmet. I just wanted who ever purchases it to know where it has been. I grew up with stories of rocket attacks, F4 Phantoms, and an A1 Skyraider pilot that wore a long white scarf that flowed to the tail of the plane as he took off like a World War I flying ace. He talked about standing post at the end of the runway during a typhoon. He once told a story about, during a rocket attack, he was the first at the bomb shelter and there were no lights. Scared of the creepy crawly things and the snakes, especially the snakes, he hesitated until someone shoved him into the hole. Luckily, there was nothing too bad inside. The year in Vietnam was a benchmark in his life.
The helmet is in great wearable condition. It includes the steel pot, the liner, and the helmet cover. The steel pot was white washed and has some writing on it. I am going to speculate as to the meaning of some of the items painted. The 71 is the year that his tour was up. The "R.L.," I am guessing was for Round Lake, where he grew up in Illinois. As for the "GARE," this is a mystery. If you happen to know what it means, please let me know. The cover does have some holes where the pot has rubbed against it for years. Inside the cover is the name "KAYE." That is my mom's nickname. Dad was an engineering student and he stenciled it in with his drafting tools. The band around the helmet is not original to the helmet, but was given to me years latter. I have no information about that. The helmet has 50 years of age on it so it is not in perfect condition.
