USS Butler DD 636 ENGINEERING COURSE RECORD BOOK by A.R. CHIRILLO ~1942-43:
Here is the provenance of these Engineering Course Volumes I & II aboard the USS Butler DD 636 by A.R. Chirillo. August R. Chirillo was an engineering graduate of State University of New York Maritime College Ft. Schuyler in I believe 1941. He joined the Navy as a Lieutenant and served aboard the USS Butler where he had to be indoctrinated into the engineering department aboard the ship. These two volumes record his work familiarizing himself with all of the engineering systems throughout the ship. I believe he served up until shortly before the time the Butler was torpedoed in 1945 as he recounted the story of this attack stating he was not on board. Gus Chirillo followed this service in a career with the Military Sealift Command as a contracting officer I believe in Bayonne, NJ. He retired in the late 1970s early 1980s and worked at Coastal Dry Dock and Repair Corp located at the old Brooklyn Navy Yard. It was at this job that my husband met him and worked for him from 1984-1986. Gus retired from Coastal in 1986 and gave these two volumes to my husband who has had them ever since. Gus lived in New Hyde Park, NY for many years. He happened to know my husband's father who owned a hardware store for many years on Hillside Ave in New Hyde Park. Volume I is filled cover to cover with beautiful handwritten script. Included are many diagrams and sketches of engineering systems aboard the ship. Volume II is filled up to the letter 'D' so about 15% of the way. There is a document inserted into this volume referring to some 'Engineering Questions & Answers' from Nov 10, 1939. My guess is that this is probably from his college days/records as the Butler was not built until 1942. Covers of both volumes are intact - some soiling from being aboard ship. Not much shelf wear otherwise. Bindings are intact as well with no pages adrift. Quite a few diagrams inserted among the pages. This is priced for a highly motivated collector. I sell alot of handbags, clothing, footwear, sports gear and accessories that you can see by clicking the links below. Thanks! Check out my other other items! I do my very best to describe my handbags accurately. Please be advised that with any description there is some amount of subjectivity to it. It is also possible that I completely miss a mark/scuff or other indication that you might consider objectionable. In instances like these, if they happen, please take a moment to reflect upon it and reach out to me before posting bad response. I will do what I can to make amends if necessary. You can also return most items within 30 days. Thank you! My shipping costs are estimates and as such assume a 'worst case scenario' - that is, what it might cost to go the furthest distance from New Jersey (typically the West coast). I also have begun to cite 'economy shipping' which can be as long as 10 days however most often I will upgrade that to either USPS priority mail (2-3 day delivery) or first class mail (up to 5 day delivery but usually sooner) but I don't guarantee in doing that. Also, if the postage is less than what you paid for shipping I will rebate you back cash in dollar increments in the package. If postage is more, I will absorb the extra cost. My response is very good - please check to get an idea of how I try to exceed my customers' expectations!
