1918 World War 1

RNAS (Royal Navy Air station – Royal Navy SeaplaneBase) Westgate on Sea, Kent, England

Original British World War 1 British Government Blue PrintPlan.

Also, the accompanying original 4 page British War Cabinet GovernmentContract.

“Forthe alterations and additions to an existing building to be fitted with a hotair heating Installation”

The small coastal town of Westgate-on-Sea in Kent, England, playeda part in the Great War which was disproportionate to its size. It was, at thattime, being part of the Isle of Thanet Rural District from which all officialinstructions were issued. Life in the town was completely changed by thepresence of the RNAS seaplane base and a large number of army personnel, whowere there for the duration to protect the base and prepare for the threat of aGerman invasion, also many wounded soldiers who were being treated at the WestgateVAD hospitals.

The Royal Naval Air Station at St Mildred’s Bay, Westgate-on-Sea,England was opened in June 1914 and used by sea planes throughout the War,there were slipways which were used to take the planes out of the water. Sadly, the last relics of the RNAS Westgate Base including the wide concrete seaplaneslipway were removed by Thanet District Council in 1995. Now there is just aplaque on a plinth with a plan, together with a brief history of the RNASWestgate.

As the threat of air raids grew during the autumn of 1914 it wasrealized that there was a need for an airfield for planes to operate from whendefending local towns. In December 1914 it was decided that an airfield on thecliffs above the sea plane base would be a good site as it could use existingcommunications; after construction of hangers the airfield became operationalon the 9th of April 1915. The airfield was guarded and no civilians wereallowed to approach it but the sands were still open to civilians and peopleusing the beach were able to watch the sea planes taking off and landing butwere not able to approach the slipways or sheds used to house the sea planes.

The sea planes operated regular patrols in the Channel and ThamesEstuary looking for U-boats and carried with them pigeons which could bedispatched back to base should the plane have to ditch in the sea due to enginefailure.

When the RAF was formed on the 1st of April 1918 by theamalgamation of RNAS and RFC (Royal Flying Corp) Westgate RNAS officiallybecame known as 219 Squadron RAF.
