War of 1812 Manuscript Militia Pay Document – 1815

Offered for yourconsideration is a manuscript document verifying the service of a member of themilitia during the War of 1812, and his subsequent receipt of pay. Headlined “Concord”(New Hampshire) and dated “March 10th 1815”, thebody of this document states that “I hereby certify that Robert Haines ofConcord in the County of Rockingham and State of New Hampshire did serve as aprivate Soldier in the N. H. Detached Militia in the service of the U. S. inthe company under my command stationed at Fort Constitution from the 15thof September 1814 to the 12th November 1814 inclusive which pay heis entitled to as a private”. It is signed at the conclusion by “Nath’lG Bradley” in his capacity as “Capt”. The opposite side indicatesthat there was “Received of Jacob Cutter A. D. P. M. Eighteen Dollars and Sixty sixCents in full of my pay and clothing as a Private Soldier in the N. H. DetachedMilitia commencing on the 15th day of September 1814 and ending onthe 19th day of November 1814 at eight Dollars per month for my pay”.This is signed by “Robert Haines”, with an additional signature at the left whichappears to be “Isaac Eastman”, presumably serving as a witness. Below thissignature is a column breaking down the total payment into “Pay”and “Subsistence”,with numbers associated with each, adding to the total payment. While documentsrelating to the Civil War are reasonably plentiful, it is unusual to encounterdocuments from the War of 1812 (the armies were much smaller, the war was muchshorter, and less paperwork would have been produced and saved). Rarely seen onthe collector’s market. Worthy of further research.

The presently offeredspecimen exhibits signs of significant period use and subsequent long-termstorage. Light toning is present across the entire surface, with several largerstains noted. This toning has imparted to the paper a yellow to light tancolor. The edges are slightly darker and stained, as are the expected folds. These folds have weakened the paper, causing separations at the edges (thesecould be easily repaired with archival tape). The contrast is average, thoughthe signatures seem to be somewhat lighter than the text, especially the two onthe back (Eastman’s signature has almost disappeared). Ink show through ispresent on both sides, though due to the nature of the paper, this has noteroded any of the letters. Measuring approximately 5⅛ x 7⅛ inches, this piecewould make a wonderful research project for the local historian. One wonderswhat form of payment Haines received for his service (possibly some Capped Busteagle or half eagle gold coins). Interesting and unusual.

A charge of $5.95 will beadded to the winning offer for postage and insurance.
