Recovered Soviet Awards?

I was thinking today after reading recent posts about awards being returned to the state on death and so on, just what tales some Soviet awards would have to tell. I was wondering are there any known stories of Soviet forces "surrendering" or being encircled and awards being "lost in battle" or "stolen" by German forces only to be reunited with the original awardee after they were "liberated" from German hands? or maybe retrieving a battlefield dug award and returning them to the person who originally was awarded with it?

Thinking upon this subject some more is it possible that we collectors have items in our collections which were awarded to people who are still alive? I know I have at least a group to a relative who is alive and also an award to a US MOH winner who is still alive. So we could possibly have soviet awards and documents which were once someone's who is still alive. Has anyone out there had a similar experience of purchasing an award and with research finding the awardee still alive?

Hello,

I recently met a German collector that had some captured Soviet awards that were sent back from a SS officer. He tried to find them but we could not locate them amongst the thousand of items that he has at his house.

As soon as he finds them I will ask him for photos and serial numbers to post on this forum.
