Badge "Participant Of Operation "Anadyr'"".
I bought this medal a while back, but have not found it in any of the books. I was wondering if anyone knew how many of these medals were issued, and could provide any more information as to their background.
It was originally described on Ebay as: "This is an official medal just issued by Russian Government "To Participant of the Operation "Anadir". I never knew it, but operation Anadir was the official name in Russian documents for the operation of delivering and mounting Soviet missiles in Cuba in 1962. As you see on the scan, the front of the medal shows a map of Cuba with Russian missile, tanks, and radar surrounded by an airplane and ship with big roman numerals XXXV, and an olive branch. The back of the Medal reads in Russian: "To Participant of the Operation "Anadir". Caribbean crisis. 1962". Though the medal must have been issued three years ago, it is the first time I have seen it, during my summer trip to Russia. This medal must have been an extremely limited issue. To start with, many participants of this Operation are not around anymore, plus a lot of participants live not in Russia anymore but rather in other countries-Ukraine, Belorus, etc, so very few people were actually awarded with this decoration. The medal was made at Moscow mint." Thanks. Kind Regards, Shane Cook. |

Hi
First, it is a post USSR period RUSSIAN medal. According to a booklet named "Russian federation decorations 1991-1997 (By Marjan Furlan, Marty Goodman & Adam Livingstone - B/W scans, looks like home made reference material) it was issued in 1997, and about 200 issued in that year. I also saw this medal, and appreceate it if you could have it PROPERLY scaned and put the picture here. I can't see a mint mark in the scan you submitred. is ther one on the medal or the ring? Shane,
It's not a medal, but a commemorative badge. It was issued in 1997, and somebody had told me that it was minted in huge numbers. Alexei |
