Re: The History Of Suspension?
As this is not a forum that deals with US awards or awards of the post-1945 "American Bloc", I shall stay quiet.
I could say much, having done an undergraduate thesis on the evolution of a US awards "system". (No place ever had a "system", they just made it up and they went along and things changed massively over time, something collectors often wish to ignore.) |

Re: The History Of Suspension?
Which DPRK awards had the 5 sided "Danish" suspensions? They usually had vertical sides similar to the Czechoslovakia Medals with the exception of some which are on 4 sided suspensions similar to Hero Stars (and some not so similar) and at least one (the Friendship Medal) has a Mongolian style suspension.

Re: The History Of Suspension?
The evolution of awards worldwide is a very complicated thing indeed but I'm sure if there were no wars or conflicts at all there would be FAR less in the way of awards out there in number of those instituted and issued.
Awards are very much an extension of politics and some times far more overtly than others.

Re: The History Of Suspension?
I suppose if you want someone to blame for Disney and Coca-cola (both of which do not issue military awards - YET!), I suppose you could blame those who invented money way back when.
I personally would focus more "irritation" at Graco and Lordship....

Re: The History Of Suspension?
The DDR awards were pentagonal, but of a very different geometry (see below). I suspect many Cuban awards were made in the DDR? As many Albanian awards, for a time, were made in Yugoslavia.

But that is off-topic, as it is in standard Soviet style. |

Re: The History Of Suspension?
Ed was perfectly right with his statement about GDR specific pentagonal geometry; I just wanted to correct his sentence "for some things only". The pentagonal suspension was not affected to some things only, but to the vast majority of their official orders, prizes and medals
