Comrade Tomitskij N. The river is currently called Bobr in Czech and Bóbr in Polish. It flows to Oder in Krosno Odrzańskie (German Crossen an der Oder, Lower Serbolusitian Krosyn). That city was liberated on 20 February 1945, so it is probably that area, however I have no info on Chalk factory in the city itself.

Also, since the guy lived in Stryj, he probably had no trouble returning to the town with his parents after living in the USA - the area was part of Poland (the majority of inhabitants of the area were, of course, Ukrainian) untill 1939 and there was no problem for emigrants returning to settle down.
