My point exactly, there is nothing transitional about it, since the medal was discontinued after 1991. It is just a variation 2.

There is a transitional variation of the State Border Medal, that is identical to the old Soviet one, but has no "CCCP" on the back. It was used till they switched to a new design in 1992.

After 1992 they kept Bravery and Ushakov medals with minor modifications.

I see your point nota bene. I think it´s called transitional and not variation 2 because it´s awarded after the ussr was gone. After 1994 the new russian federation was formed and adapted there own medals. Nakhimow medal 1992-94 is not an soviet medal and tot an russian thereby an transitional medal.
Best wishes

Gentlemen,

The medal that Ed is talking about (Ed, please, correct me if I am wrong) is identical to the one we are discussing here. My guess is that they were simply using the Soviet leftovers, and this exact variation was also awarded during the Soviet times, at least since the 1980s.

Alexei,

The medal I am speaking of the like the one in the scan. They are not Soviet leftovers as they are different in quality and construction. Its hard to explain, but if you hold the Soviet and Transitional piece side by side, you will see the difference right away. The transitional medal seems lighter in weight, has a one piece loop that is made as part of the medal, is usually a bright "gold" color. I also have not seen a serial numbered transitional piece and I am not sure if they ever were numbered.

I wish I could explain it better,
Ed

Ed,

Ok, now I am confused . I thought the one on Sovvisor's scan is a Soviet issue. If you look at it at a small angle, the medallion looks/is slightly concave. I have seen one of those with a duplicate document, it was numbered and was also a duplicate. The research confirmed that a duplicate was indeed given to the person. It was awarded if I remember corrctly in the 1980s. I have also seen exact same medals without the serial number. So the one I am talking about would be variation 3, right?

Alexei

Alexei,

I do not mean to be confusings. I do not know the authenticity of the scaned medal, just that it looks similar to the transitional Nakhimov medals. The transitional was not authorized until 1993 and you can tell the difference between a Soviet era medal and a transition piece by the quality. Thats all I know about the piece.

Sorry to be confusing,
Ed

Ed,

Would you by any chance have a scan of the transitional medal?

Nahimov Medal var. 3

Hi guys,

This is Nahimov var. 3 serial #8281

The measurements are as follows;
Diameter: 36.24mm
Thickness (measured 3 points of rim on medal): 2.68mm - 2.96mm

Obverse has 110 dots around
Reverse has 111 dots around

Can you please confirm from the scans if this is a genuine piece?

At this time I am unable to get an exact weight of the medal.

Thanks very much for your input,
Kris

Re: Lowest Serial Number You Have

Nakhimov Medal, I think this is 125...but it looks like there might be another scratch there.

Re: Researching the Nakhimov Medal

Its very nice.It will be very interesting to see what the research reveals. The medal was awarded to seamen and non-commissioned officers for distinguished conduct and gallantry in battle for the defense of the Homeland. The award consists of a pentagonal ribbon with four blue stripes with 3 white stripes separating them. From the ribbon is suspended a 38mm bronze medal with the bust of Nakhimov and the inscription "Admiral Nakhimov" on the obverse. The reverse of the medal shows a sailing ship superimposed over two crossed anchors surrounded by ship's chain.Over 13,000 Nakhimov Medals have been awarded.
