I would support Marc's opinion.
The rare variation of 2nd class, it self, is around $5,000.00.
If you add $7500.00(1st class) + $5,000.00 (2nd class) + additional $$ for other medals and group - $15000.00 is a reasonable price for this group even witout original 3rd class.
I am not sure if $15000.00 is a reasonable price for 3 classes of original orders at all. But if we assume that it is - I think this price is OK.

To all:

If one is willing to willing to pay the heavy premium for a "border reverse" 2nd Class while accepting a copy of the 3rd Class all I can say is all the more power to you.

As I've stated earlier, for me, originality trumps variant every time.

As for me, if I am willing to spend $15000.00 for the set (I am not :dissapoint ), and I have a choice, - I would buy the set with the rare 2nd class. 3rd class was lost and replaced buy a copy, however the most expensive and rare items 1st and 2nd are present.
Also, it comes with group of other medals.
Of course, each person would do and think differently. It is just my opinion.

Full Cavalier's sets are currently around 8000-9000 (I know of a few sold even below that quite recently), and if not for the super rare 2nd class #21, this set would have been even slightly lower, because of the veteran's replaced 3rd class. However, ANY Class border reverse of any S/N is now $5000 minimum (without anything else), and this one is at least 6500-7000, given the serial number+order's book+condition, so that adds the value to whatever amount dealer's asking.
But, once again, to each his own, and this is merely a perception question. Although, if slava1class is purifying the meaning of "full-complete-unaltered" cavalier set, this set should be quite alright, since IT IS THE VETERAN HIMSELF, who replaced his lost award with a cast copy of HIS OWN 2nd class, and proudly wore all 3 AS IS for many years..., the photo confirms this fact conclusively.

To all:

While I certainly respect AlexF's opinion, my firm personal belief is that far too much weight/value/importance is associated with variants - especially in the case of the "border reverese" Slava/Glory variants. While the resulting inflated monetary "value" accrues directly to the dealers' bank accounts, I would argue that it means little for the collector in that when all is said and done a Glory 2nd or 3rd Class remains just that - even if it happens to be the "rare" border reverse variant.

It is the dealers themselves who've created/whipped up this whole inflated price scheme for variants. I cannot imagine this was Paul McDaniel's intent when he began the laborious priocess of documenting variants in the first place.

Personally, I would never spend $5K for a border reverse Glory 2nd. Applying that money against an original Glory 1st would be a much wiser expenditure in my view.

Thank You, slava1class, I was just about to get to that point - at certain level, in my personal view, collector's tend to stop and look far beneath the type-variation part of the award - at the real person and his/her deed. We already see this quite often, when collectors don't accumulate variations, but rather one single award (say, P.War 1st class), but only for certain heroic deed, or certain battle, or certain type of military force (only snipers, for instance), only postumous, and so on... Same applies to HSU groups, and Glory's...
So, in a nutshell, price may (and will, in my firm opinion) reflect the rarity associated with the history and heroism, more so than with the variation. Awards of HSU pilots, who are aces, already command prices of different levels, than similar items of pilots, who didn't quite distinquish themselves. Same with glory cavaliers groups - some are more desirable than others. The one we discuss, for one, is to recon. sergeant., I think this is probably as good as it gets :love
