Re: Cavalry Visor
Hi Marc,
Can you please point out why? The cap looks quite good to me. Please post one that you feel is good so we can see the differences in your mind between a 'real' one and a "St.Petersburgian". DougD Last edited by DougD; 02-02-2009 at 04:24 PM. |

Re: Cavalry Visor
Marc,
Here is another one posted in our forum, from another seller, that also looks good to me...please point out what is wrong with these (in your eyes)? I have only had in about 20-25 in the past 12 years or so, mostly from three well known collector / authors in Russia. They, along with myself, really must have missed some glaring issues that tell you that these are "St.Petersburgian". I am sure you have been able to examine many many real examples and so can post them here and show us how you came to your conclusions. Thanks! Re: Cavalry Visor
Here are a few more early cavalry caps from the past 10-12 years. They seem to compare favorably with the cap int he first photo. DougD

Re: Cavalry Visor
:thumbsup I have handled and collected the 1927 Soviet cavalry visors and these all look great to me. The cloth and sweatbands on all of them appear consistent and old. One thing collectors need to understand about these caps is that many were only worn for a limited period of time and many were probably kept by the families or sent to museums not long after the 1929 regulations established the standard olive/dark blue/black piping examples. This explains why many of them, aside from staining, are in pretty nice shape. Likewise, I believe one of these hats was in my collection some time ago. Needless to say, nice hats!

Re: Cavalry Visor
If anyone has the chart that shows the colors of the early cavalry caps, can they post it here? I'll "sticky" it. I used to have it, but think I lent my issue of Zueghuas out to a friend so he could color copy the chart...and never got it back!

Re: Cavalry Visor
It may be the shadowing on the photos. At first I thought the hat band looked like the cheesey band you will see on copy M43's and M55's but there were several other features I've only seen in genuine caps that have gone through my hands. One is the cloth gizmo that protects the prongs of the star on the inside and the other is the visor itself which is identical to several caps I am quite comfortable with.
"Soviet Military Uniforms and insignia 1918-1958" (the "red book") lists the bewildering combinations of cover, band, and piping for the M27 line on pages 106-109. According to them, this cap, as described in original post, is 11th Cav Div (blue top, yellow piping), 67th regiment (red band) PS: Actually the green cap Mr. Drabik posted above (1st cav div/1st cav regiment) is one of mine although I purchased that one from another source. The yellow (3rd cav div, 14th cav regiment) is spectacular. Thanks for posting them. Last edited by Jeffrey Meffert; 02-02-2009 at 07:45 PM. Reason: confirm unit |
