This is one of ONLY four documents I purchased from a small collection which were SIGNED by OFFICERS in Colonel Jonathan Latimer’s Regiment on their march NORTH to reinforce General Horation Gates AMERICAN Army just prior to the pivotal “Battle of Saratoga”. I ONLY have two documents left for sale.

HISTORIC, Revolutionary War document SIGNED by LT COLONEL Joel Jones, who served in COLONEL Jonathan Latimer’s Connecticut Regiment. Document is dated September 4th 1777, just 15 DAYS before LT COLONEL Joel Jones FOUGHT in the September 19th “Battle of Freeman’s Farm”, the FIRST important engagement in the “Battle of Saratoga”. The document concerns the ADVANCE PAY for the Non-Commissioned Officers + Privates, “Now Under Marching Orders to Join the Northern Army”. Connecticut COLONEL Jonathan Latimer’s Militia Regiment was sent north to reinforce General Horatio Gates Army just PRIOR to the Battle of Saratoga and was praised by General Gates for their active role during the battle.

Document reads in full – ”Rec’d (received) Hartford Sept. 4th 1777 from Com’tte (Committee) of Pay Table there Ord’r (Order) on Treas’r (Treasurer) for four hundred pounds for the purpose of advancing 20 ??? to Each Non Com’d (Non Commissioned) Officer & private of Col’o (Colonel) Latimers Reg’t (Regiment) now under Marching Ord’rs (Orders) to Join the Northern Army & for which I am to Account. Joel Jones Lt Colo.”

BATTLES of SARATOGA (September 19th and October 7th 1777) – in response to the invasion of British forces under General Burgoyne advancing south from Canada in the summer of 1777, the Connecticut Colony sent TWO Militia Regiments “northward” to help supplement General Horatio Gates American Army, who were ordered to confront the threat. Upon their arrival, the Connecticut Regiments of COLONEL Jonathan Latimer and COLONEL Thaddeus Cook were placed under the command of Brigadier General Enoch Poor. Colonel Latimer’s forces fought in the September 19th “Battle of Freeman’s Farm”, the first of the two engagements in the Saratoga campaign. Colonel Latimer’s casualties included – two privates killed, nine privates wounded, and one Captain (Daniel Clark) missing. Captain Clark was found the following day by American troops scouting the enemy’s positions. Captain Clark had been shot in the head and left for dead. Barely alive, he was treated by the medical staff but succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.
