Nice Brazilian Model 1880 cavalry trooper sword made by Alex Coppel of Solingen. This large sword has a single-fullered spear-pointed blade that is bright with uniform patina, some light discoloration in spots, and is unsharpened with no nicks or damage. Steel bowl guard and pressed black leather grips secured to the exposed full-width tang with five steel rivets are in very nice condition. All parts rock solid with no movement. Steel scabbard holds sword securely but is missing throat screws.


The blade is stamped on one side with the maker’s mark: a set of scales and "Alex Coppel Solingen." On the obverse is a Brazilian proof mark. The hilt is stamped "E.U.B." for ‘Estados Unidos do Brasil’.


These swords are basically the British Pattern 1853 Universal cav trooper sword with the British Patttern 1821 heavy cav trooper steel bowl guard. Sword is 42 inches long, blade is 35.5 inches in length, and weighs 2.5 lbs.
