Confidential War Damage Report No. 28 - Torpedo Damage and Loss of the U.S.S O'BRIEN - DD415 - Sept. 15, - Oct. 19, 1942Bureau of Ships, Navy Department......The O'BRIEN was a 348' Destroyer Class operating in the South Pacific engaged as an anti-submarine screen vessel for the aircraft carrier "HORNET" when she was torpedoed by a submarine.during the afternoon of 15 SEP 42. This classified "Confidential" report was assembled and sent to all EDO (Hull) officers in the Navy for use in re-evaluating structure and tactics. Contents include a one page summary, a 14 page narrative, discussion and conclusion. 9 photographs and three 8-fold plates I,II,III. The third plate is unique in that it illustrates the repairs done by the navy to H.M.S. Ilex : a British "I" Class Destroyer and included as informational to the fleet. A looseleaf unfolded order to all recipients by Direction of C. D. Wheelock, Chief of Bureau is included.
