Rare and Unique Archive of Documents and Photographs from Col. Charles Howard Withrow, 1st Regiment, Confederate Engineer Troops. Withrow was a popular figure in Virginia and Georgia and his obituary was published in Vol XXIX, Confederate Veteran, June 1921, p 347. The documents are signed by several important Confederate officers and staff members.

The frame contains the following items:

8) Document on CSA letterhead, signed by Secretary of War James Seddon, promoting Withrow to the Ordnance Department. He would serve the remainder of his enlistment with the Engineers

10) Document or Order, on Headquarters Army of Northern Virginia letterhead, signed by RE Lee's famous assistant William Taylor, promoting Withrow to Ordnance Officer

The archive is professionally matted in a 32x44 wood frame that is very heavy and nice. If the buyer wishes, they can choose to receive the documents only and receive free shipping, but please note this is a well made was born February 6, 1838, in the home where he died, in Waynesboro, Va., on the 27th of January 1921. He received a MA from the University of Virginia in 1860 and began a long career in education.His career began at Natchez, Miss., but when the war came he returned to Virginia and enlisted in the Richmond Howitzers, was commissioned a lieutenant, and attached to a corps of civil engineers; was later made Colonel and put on General Rosser's staff (see documents).He participated in the campaigns around the battle of the Wilderness and Petersburg, retreating to Appomattox Court House.

After the war Colonel Withrow returned to his chosen vocation as a language teacher and continued this good work for the remainder of his active life. He filled the chair of Greek at Hampden Sidney College and afterwards taught in Kentucky at the Danville Classical and Military Academy. In that State he met and married Miss Mary Shyock, of St. Louis,Mo., in 1874, and their two sons died in infancy. After the death of his wife in 1878 he removed to Augusta, Ga., and became a member of the faculty of Richmond Academy and was later its principal for twenty-nine years. He also served as professor at the Medical Institute of Georgia at Augusta (AMI).

His retirement was marked by many tributes from the faculty and graduating class to his worth and ability and devotion to his work. He then returned to Waynesville to spend his last days, teaching in Fishburne School for several years, and twice being elected mayor of the town. He then retired permanently and devoted his time to his farming and fruit-growing interests. Colonel Withrow was a man of brilliant intellect and broad culture and was considered one of the foremost educators of his time, leaving the imprint of his genius upon the records of his labors and achievements.
