US Civil War Model 1840 Artillery Sword with Scabbard. The ricasso is marked "AMES MFG", "CHICOPEE", "MASS." and the reverse has "U.S.", "M.M.", "1864". The top edge of the pommel has a partial "J.H.". The pommel is tight, the grip is a tiny bit loose, and the guard has a little wiggle. The original grip has been covered with leather, not sure when it was done or what the original grip condition is, I can see the grooves through this covering so at least the wood may be underneath, it will be up to you on whether or not to remove this. Also unsure about the twisted wire.The blade is straight, unsharpened, one nick, no pitting, and has small light age spots scattered throughout. The scabbard is solid with a few small dents/dings, and there is light pitting with a little minor surface rust scattered throughout. The leather washer is missing. Length of the blade is 32" (1 1/4" wide and 5/16" thick), the sword is 37 3/8", and in the scabbard it is 39 3/16".
