This is a sword that we bought from the family of the navy officer that brought this back home from his time in the War. WWII saw many Japanese family blades being confiscated, and many thousands were destroyed. Sad fact is that thousands of these family blades were scrapped and melted to make rail wheels for trains. Even more were tossed into the ocean. This sword has survived in it's battle-carried state. I was told by the granddaughter that her Grandfather bought it from a Marine that had captured it on one of the Islands where they fought directly against the Japanese. She was unsure what island, unfortunately. While the Marines rested and regrouped, they mingled and this sword was exchanged on ship, post-battle. The capture box states the nature of it's contents, and fits the sword perfectly. The blade shows some blade knicks- these may have been bone knicks, but I never looked close enough. Metal would dent a bit, as blade to blade would be. Either way, this has been away from kids it's entire time in the States, and until recently, has been closed in this box under their grandparents bed. There is sat for 74 years. The hamon is faint, but a wavy pattern is definitely visible, and would really glow with a good polishing. The blade is out of polish. Images 15, 16, 17 show it better, but honestly it is a hard one to capture with my phone. There is a family crest in the end fitting on the handle. This is the Makano clan, from what I can gather by comparing images elsewhere. There is also an interesting stamp in the end of the blade's handle
