The P38 can opener is legendary for its usefulness and durability. Since its introduction in 1942 this tool and its larger version, the P51, have served the US Military with distinction. The P38’s main use was opening C-Ration cans, which the US Military used to feed troops on the front lines from the 1940s until the introduction of MRE pouches in the mid 1980s.

It is unknown where the designation P38 originated. Some say the P38 and P51, were named after American fighter aircraft of the same names. Others point out the P38 and P51 measure 38mm and 51mm respectively. Still, the fact that it takes 38 punctures with a P38 to open a C Ration, should not be overlooked.

J.W. Speaker Corp. was one of the manufacturers of the tool, and many came in envelopes stamped with their company name. This may be why many veterans know it as the John Wayne, tough and reliable. Dozens of companies have made P38s, these were made in the US by Shelby Co.
