ORIGINAL MEDAL / DOCUMENT / INSIGNIA ETC GROUPING WWII USMC ACE CO VMF-121 GUADALCANAL. Bought from veterans estate. This USMC officer was commissioned and completed flight training in 1936. Served as XO of VMF-111 in Samoa, CO of the famous VMF-121 flying off Guadalcanal. Flying F4Fs he shot down 6 Zeros in 2 days in December 1942 earning him a Silver Star. Lt Col in 1943 and commanded MAG-51 and then MGVG-4 flying F4Us off the USS Cape Gloucester. 2 victories over a Judy and Francis in 1945 brought his tally to 8. During the Korean War he was deputy CO of Marine Air Group 21 and again flying combat earned a second Silver Star. Retired in 1959 as a Brig General. Found a few more items I had put aside. This lot consists of all his full size medals,2 rows of bar mounted and one loose. All unnamed as issued, one awarded on Guadalcanal. Ribbon bars, various rank insignia, pinback WWII wings, ladder badge, WWII visor cap EG&A, pre war collar EG&A, period newspaper articles, original VMF-121 squadron photo on Guadalcanal, 3 medal cases, Air medal case is Army style as he was awarded an USAAF air medal. Binder containing all his medal citations and approval / transmittal correspondence. Paper trail for all medals awarded in WWII and Korea, complete set of his Secretary of Navy signed citations. His biography, newspaper article from Korea showing him being awarded the Legion of Merit in Korea, all told approx 60 original medal and medal related documents in archival pages, lots of officer signatures. Historic grouping! Guaranteed original!
