Rare Lot of 4 WW1 1914 Scientific American War Issues - Very Interesting:
$95.50

World War 1 broke out in July 1914 and these magazines were released in the months of September through December 1914. So, these will account for the beginnings of the war in Europe. Since this is a technological based magazine, the primary focus is on each country\'s war armaments, but they also look at war strategies and other military aspects beyond technology. You\'ll be surprised at the level of detail each of these magazines provide on the armies of Europe - troop counts, naval ships, artillery, armored vehicles...more and more and more. For example, they name all the ships of each navy and even give detailed diagrams on the many different aerial bombardments. It honestly is a mind-boggling number of details that would be difficult to find in many history books. Plus, I\'m sure there are many pictures in these that have never been used elsewhere.
It was early in the war, so you get a glimpse at each army at their full force and see the \"new\" military technology entering the war. Things like airplanes, tanks, submarines, torpedoes had been used in military conflicts sparingly in the past but now we would start to see wide military applications and the Scientific American would explore these innovations as they anticipated their uses in this war.
The Scientific American magazine is unlike Popular Mechanics and Popular Science as it has much more detailed articles, so it focused on quality over quantity. While it did have ads, it was not overloaded like the above magazines. These have interesting large print ads from motor companies which no longer exist, which is a fun added bonus. It was a weekly publication, so these WW1 issues were released once per month amongst other issues. It is very hard to find any of these particular single issues and extremely hard to find all four so take advantage.
Condition - there are many blemishes and many that are noticeable. Three of the issues indicate there are map \"supplements\" and those are not included. They were missing when I received them. The covers, while still fun to look at do have noticeable stains, all but one is torn at the spine and held to together with tape. Issue #4 is missing the back cover and I think the first and last page (which was primarily advertising). Some may have large tears and there will be few areas where someone sniped a coupon out. While the blemishes are numerous 98% of the content is intact (accounting for the missing supplements) and this is the main reason you should want to purchase these - large amount and very informative content which we see as history, and they read as current events.
