England contracted with Remington to produce a British version of the M-1903 Springfield after the Dunkirk evacuation in May 1940 left the Brits without badly needed arms. Just as production was set to begin in September 1941, the order was canceled, but the US government stepped in the same day and ordered over 100,000 M-1903s from Remington for the rapidly expanding US Army. Remington made a small number of important changes to simplify manufacture, and the improvements were standardized as the Remington \"M-1903A3\" Springfield in May 1942. This US Army USMC Marine WW2 REMINGTON M-1903A3 SPRINGFIELD \"R\" MARKED RIFLE BOLT is in very good condition, with three spots of pitting at the right back, and with some scattered patina and age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the bolt is in fine shape, with absolutely no cracking or other damage to the tough steel construction. Most interestingly, it boasts an elegantly finished handle, sports the traditional 03A3 \"step\" near that handle, and carries the familiar \"R\" for Remington stamping at the back underside of the handle.
