  • An original envelope and hand-written 4-page letter (each one-sided), dated August 18, 1918;
  • This letter is very special because it was the first letter that soldier, Harry Nadel sent to his family as he began his military service.
  • The envelope marked #1 by his parents and stamped as passing inspection by the military.
  • The letter was written at sea. As evidenced by subsequent letters (see our other listings), Harry is on his way to France.
  • Harry was part ofCo. A, 51st Pioneer Infantry, AEF (American Expeditionary Forces).
  • Harry'scivilian job was atParamount Pictures. Joe, his brother who was mentioned in the letter, was an accomplished film producer and director
This poignant WWI letterconveys that Harry's only fear is that his parents are worried about him. He reassures them that he "trusts in God" that he will be fine. He says he cannot reveal certain specifics about his trip, but says it is so far "interesting," and he has not been seasick. He writes that it is wonderful to stand guard on the upper deck of the ship and gaze at the beautiful sea, "especially when you can see the strong convoy that accompanies you, ready to sink any 'sub' that even dare come near." He instructs his folks to number his letters.He sends Joe a special note, thanking him for the game of checkers that was popular on the trip
This is an opportunity to own one-of-a-kind historical ephemera.
