WWII Letters. Training Unit with Audie Murphy 1942. Company K, 385th Infantry:
$20.00

This is a very interesting grouping of SIX original WWII letters. They were written in late 1942 and early 1943 by a soldier in the same advanced infantry training company as famous American war hero and movie actor Audie L. Murphy; Company K, 385th Infantry Regiment, 76th Infantry Division. After completing training this soldier and Audie Murphy arrived together in North Africa on 20 February 1943, where they were both assigned as replacements to Company B, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. Both served throughout the remainder of the war in the 3rd Division.

The soldier who wrote these letters was himself decorated, receiving the Bronze Star medal with V device and oak leaf cluster, and the Purple Heart with two oak leaf clusters.

**** These six letters contain considerable and quite vivid detail of Company K's advanced infantry training in the field. Audie Murphy's training experiences would have mirrored those described in the letters; Murphy would have been present for all of the field training described in them. This is significant, as very little has been written about Audie Murphy's experiences during his training.

There is interesting and informative content throughout these letters.

*** These letters were written by Private (later Staff Sergeant) Wilbert Krieger, who fought in Sicily, Italy, France, and Germany in the 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. Sergeant Krieger was awarded two Bronze Star medals, three Purple Heart medals, and seven campaign stars.

Sergeant Krieger was initially assigned to B Company of the 15th Infantry Regiment at the same time as Audie Murphy, after they arrived together in Morocco on 20 February 1943. Krieger was reassigned to K Company in July, just prior to the invasion of Sicily.

A very interesting original grouping, offering some rare insights into the early service of Audie L. Murphy.

*** NOTE: I have shown some images of a censored cover from North Africa in 1943, and a handwritten summary of his service to date from early 1945, both from Wilbert Krieger. These are shown FOR INFORMATION PURPOSES ONLY. These items are NOT INCLUDED. I do not own them. I just have these scans in my research archive, and I am showing them as proof that Wilbert Krieger, like Audie Murphy, was assigned to B Company, 15th Infantry, shortly after arrival in North Africa in February 1943, as well as some details of his later wounds and decorations.
