sale for lot of material belonging toUSAS/USAAF/USAF Balloon Observer/Observer and author Samuel Taylor Moore, Col, USAFR (RET). Group includesphotos,Mexican Service Medal, WWI medal, VFW and American Legion Medals, letter, commission certificate anddocuments.Otheritems of this large grouping covering Moore's military careerwill be offered in separate sales including his observer wings with the actual award documents and patches with attributing documents.

1. Six photos from WWI through the 1920s. Photos are various sizes with a larger one of 6 x 4." They include a balloon hanger from Scott fld, barrage balloon,7th Balloon Company in WWI, Moore by a Model T, Moore and another pilot by and aircraft. Photos show signs of fading/toning with age, wear/tear to include chips and tears.Writing on back id's some of the photos.

2.Medals include Mexican Campaign Medal (no number),World War One Victory Medal with bars St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, Defensive Sector and citation star (you can read what the citation star was awarded for in his bio below),American Legion Medal, VFW Medal, American Legion School Award for Leadership in case.Mexican Campaign Medal well used/frayed. Moore did not receive a numbered Mexican Service Medal according to records. WWI medal shows signs of wear/use but in good condition for age. VFW medalhas separated fromwell frayed/worn ribbon and is only attached for purposes of the photo. American Legion School medal case shows wear/tear while medal itself in overall good condition for age.

3. Ribbon bars is a two place narrow army style ribbon for Mexican Campaign/WWI with open catch. It is a sewn pin back with no bronze stars. Itis worn andfrayed.There is also a narrowArmy style pin backpatriotic medal with Red/White/Blue stripes, sewn, on metal bar, very thin, with swivel clasp,not pictured. I believe the ribbondates from 1932.

4. Three documents/letters, one personal letter and one veteran's flyer. A. Letter to Moore dated 1919 about family matters. b.HQ letter/document from Michel Field; 9th Obs Gp dated 21 Mar 23 about article written by Moore from Maj W.R. Weaver the Co of the field. c. Reappointment letter to Army dated 3 Oct 29 with actual signature. d.US Balloon Officers World War dated 9 Nov 35 reunion document that includes speech by Col John H. Jouett.

5. Army appointment Document/Certificate appointing him a Capt in the Air Corps on 17 Nov 34.

6. Not pictured but will be included is a photocopy of Moore's career written at the time of his final retirement.

Truly a significant and historical group that could use more research.

Sam Moore was born in Westfield, MA 24 Jun 1893. He left high school in 1908 after one and one half years with no formal education afterwards. He became an author. He was a reservist throughout his career with only 11 years active duty and over 30 years reserve duty. He served as a special correspondent with Pershing in theMexican Punitive Expedition of 1916. He left his job as a White House Correspondent for the rank of First Lieutenant to become the commander of theSeventh Balloon Company in WWI. Heis mentioned in several books on WWI including The US Air Service in the Great War 1917-1919 by James Cooke and A Grandstand Seat The American Balloon Service in World War 1 by Eileen F. Lebow. He earned Silver Star Citation for gallantry in action near Avocourt, France on 2 Oct 1918. He had to parachute from his damaged balloon. He served overseas 16 months. He served three brief tours in the 1920s pioneering balloon work.During this time he was a freelance reporter. In 1940 he returned to active duty as an Air Corps Major. He served as a consultant to the Barrage Balloon Board as the Air Corps Representative, in various intelligence and staff agencies. He served as the A-2 in the CBI, at one point serving with Wingate's Chindits, flew 11 combat missions on some of the longest and most hazardous missions. He served as the A-2 of the5320th Air Defense Wing, India Air Task Force (Northern AirSector Force Provisional) 10th Air Force under Brigadier General John Egan. This unit was responsible for the 1st/2nd Air Command Gp's, 7th BG and more (ahistory of the unit is below).After the war he headed a study project in Europe on Luftwaffe Operations (he received his ETO Medal post WWII) and was then Chief of a project for overall evaluation of the AAF Troop Carrier Operations in all war theaters (was a standard reference in Troop Carrier and Airborne Ops up through Vietnam and is quoted in several books/studies); he separated from servicein 1946. He was recalled in 1948 at the age of 55 for a 15 month tour duty and then recalled foranother10 months making for a 36 month tour. He was the first commandant of USAFAGOS at Pope AFB (Tactical Air Command school). He was sent to Korea as an observer. Moore saw action from Mexico 1916 through the Korean War watching airpower grow from its infancy to the jet age. He was friends withorwork associates of Jimmy Doolittle, Frank Lahm, Hap Arnold, Claire Chennault and more.He retired from USAF for a final time on 26 June 1953 at the age of 60. He would go on to author many articles and books including US Air Power. His decorations include the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Mexican Campaign Medal, World War One Victory medal with 3/bronze stars (and one silver star citation), American Defense Service Medal, PTO medal with 3 bronze stars, American Campaign, ETO Medal, World War II Victory medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and Armed Forces Reserve Medal. During his career he wrote America and the World War (date unknown), Air Force Magazine 1963: When Sausages blazed the sky, Aces All in 1932, Fighting Aces in 1932, Undersea Heroes in 1932, Hetty the Green Witch of Wall Street in 1935, and US Air Power in 1958. After 1963 only mentions of him by various military commanders can be found. His exact date of passing has not been found. Doubtless he wrote other scholarly works, articles and so forth but his requires more research overall to fully understand the career of this individual and his overall importance to Air
