The medal is the federation of cosmonautics of the USSR commemorating S. Ryzansky.

His stars are worn on the Right side (which is the Wrong side...) I thoght the picture was just a 'miror Image' but Gagarin signed on it...so I don't know what was going on.

There is a real chance it is a "mirror image" as the man on the left has his wedding ring on the right hand, and our friend Gagarin, his watch on his right wrist... Just have to check Castro' habits for smoking cigar...

Gagarin probably just signed on a photograph printed as a "mirror image"...

Well, I dont think so, because if it was a mirror image, then Gagarin would be wearing a female style uniform (buttons attached to the right tunic side, seen from ahead)
EDIT: I am not sure if his tunic is "open" or closed. If it is closed, then it is perfectly allright. When I first looked att the pic, I got the impression that it was open, which would make the buttons be on the wrong side.

About the wedding ring - in my country at least (and I assume we have taken it from our old masters, the Russians) the wedding ring should be on right hand and engagement ring on left hand.

This is what it would look like mirror version.

Something is wrong with this whole thing...

I don't think there is anything really wrong with these photos. I have a feeling that most Soviet film-processing technicians were lazy, or at least inattentive in their approach to their tasks, because I have seen scores of private russian photos in which small details, usually un-noticed things like signs, banners, etc., gave witness to the fact that the image was flipped during processing. Why Gagarin would sign such an obviously reversed print, however, is beyond me. I would think he'd at least've insisted that it be an accurate representation of himself.

Can anyone authenticate that signature? I don't know about cosmonaughts but Hollywood stars hardly ever sign their own pictures unless you catch them face-to-face. If not, someone in the studio or their agent's does the signing - and they don't attempt to forge it either.

Could someone have signed for him and not paid any attention to the details of the photo? And Gagarin was a very busy hero until the very day of his untimely death so a "signer" would have made sense. Surely someone knew how to dress his uniform. I really think it's a mirror image.
