Yep, I just bid. We'll see what happens. I bid about 20% over the opening price.
Wish I could tell when it was listed as it has just a day and a hlaf to go before closing. If it was a 7 day auction I feel we have a better chance of winning than, say a 2 day auction. Still, I'm not confident of winning; some boob will outbid me without realizing how damaged this item really is. PS. I figure melt price to be somewhere about $20-26 (.875 silver content & .925) (not including whatever material was lost when the back was ground down.)

Oh, dear
Grinding off the serial number and CCCP is misguided enough but why on earth were they compelled to grind off the "Glory"? Some people just don't deserve to have nice things....

I agree...
It's probably because everyone are like; "OH, EW! Communism is bad, communists are the worst people on the planet. Every communist is a Stalinist" and so on... -.- Well, social democracy is like 91% communism. Works fine and no one is going crazy about it. Whats the difference? Well, it's not communism. Because that is all they care about.

Guys,
IMHO, this is senseless and hopeless. The back was filed flat, the only remote way to try and get the SN back would be to use acid on the place where it was engraved (therefore further damaging the order), and even then, the result is far from guaranteed (1 in 100). Regarding the front, I am 100% certain that the enamel is long gone. If silver solder was used, it may not be possible to get rid of it without altering irremediably the base piece. All in all, this is an exercise of extreme futility. Marc
I don't expect to get the serial number back. IF I get this I will look close, and I'll ask the jeweller to look closer for any signs but I don't expect anything good.
It's the front I want to work on. For hopefully a small fee I can get the solder removed and at least restore the obverse. From there it's just speculation but I do have some wilder ideas.... In any event I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that somebody will wildly outbid me. My guess is this goes for over $35. Here's an enhanced image of the obverse of the OG3 in question with an image of the same area of my OG3. Looks like there's some serious grinding going on. I doubt ther's gonna be much if any enamel left under the solder, and probabley no "g l o r y" either. ![]() Obvious variation difference. Does anyone else notice the small red star above the tower's door in the lower image??????? weird..... Sad to announce I didn't win, despite drunk-bidding on my part right at the end. Too bad, as I had such grand plans for this. But, it looks like the winner is a collector so maybe this will go to a good home. That's some small consolation.

Note to Eric - "Must drink more"
Shame you didn't get this one but we all know there are many more items out there that need a full overhaul. Don't blow the whole budget on booze though...... Worst case scenario.... drink till it looks good?

Ach! It went for 33 USD...
Well, Eric. I didn't bid myself, if that's any help for your recovery from the vodka. :p As CtahhR wrote; "there are many more items out there that need a full overhaul."

This is priceless... some guy identifying himself as "82marina82" (Ukraine) on our favorite auction site has been gluing unassociated badges together for a little while and trying to pass them off as the genuine article- with laughable results :laff. This one is supposed to be Soviet special forces from the war in Afghanistan... seems to have a Komsomol badge attached to a hammer head shark attached to a parachute. The best image I could get is only 4.1 kb (very small and out of focus). Oh yeah, bidding starts at $99 with a "buy it now" of $119. Wow...
