Fake KGB and "Egg" Badges
I just finished looking at this same variation on an auction web site (and at my own). Marc is correct that the most common versions of this badge had the mint mark inside the ribbon on the reverse; however, if what I read is to be believed - and I've no reason to doubt it - then this is "an extremely rare variation" and very much authentic. Considering the level of finish remaining and the fact that you got the document as well, I have to ask you to please share your source with me!:D

It's the real deal and an exquisite example.:thumbsup

Phillip

P.S. If you want the name of the site where I found the info I shared above you will have to email me at [email protected] since we are not allowed to post commercial sites

Phillip,

You can safely use the standard terminology: "THAT dealer in NJ" ;)

Hello,

Why are you writing "an extremely rare variation" in quotation marks ? Are you just kidding, or do you really think that the piece is ok and rare ?

I just want to be sure, because I have paid 230,- € for the set.

Please keep me updated.

I can't say anything about the document, but I like the badge. There were some weird variations of it, including one with reverse from Honored Employee. Just in case could the owner please post a very magnified picture of the reverse (a small section - 600dpi or better).

Though I think by now you already have my answer, the words in quotations were the exact words of "that dealer in NJ" (thank you Marc) in his decription of one just like yours. If the document is as good as it looks to be, then you got yourself a deal according to some seller's rates. So good for you, and...well, you know what, for them.:)

Hey Everyone, thanks for taking a look at this. I was wondering if this badge and book seemed authentic to those familiar with soviet era items. Thanks in advance for any information, it's very much appreciated.

Here's the book that was paired with the badge. Thanks again.

Cantrip,

Welcome to the Forum!

I am sorry to say, but both the badge and the document in your posts are crude fakes.

Yes, I agree with Alexei regarding both the welcome and the poor quality of the fakes.

The first thing you should always check with those documents and others like it (NKVD, MVD) that were supposed to be awarded with a particular badge is whether or not there is a badge number written in the place for one. In the case of the one you have pictured, it is missing which means the forger didn't want to risk putting a number or for some other reason - in the case of a certain seller, he actually told me once to just fill in the blank with whatever number badge I happened to have. Now that's class.

If you need to see a real one, back up a few posts: Shocktrooper had a good 50 year badge and I'm sure there are real ones posted - probably by me. But if you can't find one, these are the best I can do right now. They are both closeups from pictures of the entire framed set so the quality gets a little questionable since I had to zoom in on just one badge and you obviously cannot see the reverse.

See post #224 for better pics.

Oh, and thank you Alexei for moving things where they belong. I am guilty of posting things where I shouldn't on occassion.:o

BTW, while we are on the subject of variations of the 50th Anniversary Badge, here's the reverse of mine. You can see elements from the Honored Employee Badge.
