Here is the Booklet for a 31st May 1948 issued Medal "For Combat Merits" to Filipp/Filip Alekseevich/Aleksandrovich Gagnidze. Someone has had real difficulty putting a name to a recipient.

I was asked to try and track this down for another member so I gave it a shot......

Filipp Aleksandrovich Gagnidze is indeed out there....

Unfortunately the Wound Ukaz is boilerplate, the list of recipients doesn't give positions and the citation is completely AWOL. #617 for "For Combat Merits".

Could be an interesting one when everything falls into place.

There has been a little update in the last two months.

We now know Gagnidze was awarded an OPWI'85. Born in Shveri, Oni Region in 1909 and conscripted to Berija Regional Military Commissariat, Tbilisi 2nd February 1942.

Still no citation but this recent addition may lead to some other 1985 awards now being researchable.

Comrade Gagnidze F. A. actively participated in the Patriotic War in the ranks of the 802th Rifle Regiment. In the strong fight in the direction of Prohladnoj was given the task by Political Instructor Hutsishvili to take the offensive on the advancing enemy and Comrade Gagnidze forged ahead in leading the soldiers in a German ambush. He was unfaltering, began to fight back and at the distance of ten paces destroyed with his rifle 2 Germans. With the expenditure of cartridges he began to fight back with grenades at the German ambush. With a great concentration of strength of 25/1 the enemy started to encircle. At this time it was necessary to announce that the enemy was encircling the battalion and received the task to identify the location of our platoons and promptly warn of the encirclement, despite the hot battle, Comrade Gagnidze with honour fulfilled the task. Withdrawing platoons crawling back from the encirclement, was wounded in the left shoulder.

Taken from his word.

Has a certificate of illness from #4475.

Worthy of the government award of the Order "Red Star".

A small world and a downgrade that was perhaps downgraded a bit too low considering he was in actual face to face combat.
