Here is an Afghan War convoy.

Rover gets left out again..... won't even live long enough to get any commemoratives.

I love the dog

This mutt keeps good company!

Dogs were used in many roles - not just to blame for the smells in the tanks!

Dogs were used as attack dogs, sniffer dogs, to set off traps/explosives, run lines, transport messages, pull carts, food and most famously in an anti-tank role.

In return they were given the honour of being the first earthling to orbit the planet. Unfortunately for Lajka there was nothing left to attach a Hero Of The Soviet Union Gold Star on to when the mission ended.

A curiosity; the Dog Dzhul'bars (Джульбарс) minesweeper during World War II he was awarded the medal "For Military Merit".
Dzhul'bars could capture the smell of explosives up to two meters beneath the ground!
After the war Dzhul'bars played a major role in the movie "White Fang" (1946)
