how do we justifyu this activity? i notice people selling their collections because their wives are fed up with it. my girlfriend of current is completely indifferent to the activity and always teases me that she is one day going to throw out all of the old stuff

how do we explain ourselves when asked why we do it? or even more importantly, how do we justify the space it all takes up?

If she loves you, she'll accept it. Believe me, I'm married for 12 years and God blessed me with 3 daughters in a vain attempt to figure out women. They have enough of their own idiosynchrocies that far outshine hoarding metal pieces belonging to dead guys.

Same here, the girlfriend thinks the collecting addiction is an interesting hobby, and actually pays attention when I show her the new old clothes and shiny things that arrive on a weekly basis.

As for taking up a lot of space with the collection, I haven't figured that one out yet. Stuff is everywhere Smile

I guess that as far as you don't mention the costs of high end awards everything should be fine. Wink

Space is imho of minor importance, after all it depends on how one displays these Medals. I have the feeling that if nicely displayed in a way it pleases their feminine taste, no problem. After all in almost every family there is almost always someone either collecting any kind of stuff, or simply accumulating CDs or DVDs or books, you name it...

Just my 2 cents,

Well, in some cases, for some wives to which the value ( $$$ ) may be important, convincing them that it is a good investment (well of course this is only true for high end awards but it's an argument we may use even for cheap stuff, why not?... Smile ) might help...
"Honey, anyway if we need to resell it in the future nothing is lost as at least we will recover our initial investment, bla bla bla...", see what I mean... Wink

For others using the argument "Honey, better spend my money on this than on any other stuff... And better that I spend my time talking in these Forums only with guys rather than visiting other chat rooms full of females, bla bla bla..." might also be helpful... :thumbsup

Hope it helps,

I like to justify the $ expenditure this way: I buy cheap beer and bring a lunch to work. Thus, I am actually skimping on one budgetary area and utilizing my savings to purchase stuff. If you didnt collect awards, then you'd buy better beer and eat out more often, and wouldnt have the money in any case. Therefore, collecting is not really an investment, so if you do ever get $ out of your collection, it is a windfall. :thumbsup

In my case, I only buy collecting stuff with money coming from overtime... No overtime, no new purchases. This way, she doesn't say anything about the money I spend because this is extra money that we wouldn't have had if I didn't work overtime... and to me, this is a nice motivation to accept working overtime hours.

As for the space, my collection is not big so it's not too bad. Anyway, she told me that the day we have a house (we live in a small apartment now), I can have a room only for my collection! Can't wait!:thumbsup

Good idea for a post latinmajorac.

I have it pretty good with my girlfriend. I mean I have militaria all over the house: a couple blades in one corner of the kitchen, some WWII US Navy documents on the wall of the bathroom, a couple tunics on forms in the main room, book cases with reference books in three rooms, more tunics in the 2nd bedroom, some headgear in the master bedroom, a few avaition prints hanging, boxes of 'who remembers what' military stuff in the shed, garage and the basement.

My girlfrined, Amy, is pretty much indifferent to it all. She will point stuff out that she knows would interest me because she knows I like militaria. I will get something new in or show her an item I already own and she tries to be interested and she is, for about 1:45 seconds and then she is gone. She may still be standing there but she is not hearing a word I am saying! I feel very fortunate.

This is a good topic!

When I first started collecting, everyone around me was saying that it's a waste of money. I told them that they can't look at it like that, it's more of an investment! No one ever believed me.

A few months back, I decided to purchase my first home and sold a chunk of my collection (expensive stuff and duplicates) when I showed them that this stuff is liquid and cost real money they were all shocked. I paid off my credit cards and placed a nice $30,000+ downpayment on the property with some money left over. No one calls it a waste of money now!

I did get into pistols and rifles and to keep my girlfriend in it with me, I have purchased her a pistol. Now she goes shooting with me. Actually several of my friends are shooting wit me now from Makarov pistols...

I still have a hard time expalining the cloth though! It's the same 'ol story.
Why would you pay good money for a "tryapka" (rags) ???

The battle continues...
