Did "Order of Glory" medal get handed out for anything during "Prague Spring"?
I have two that would be dated to 1968 and am wondering before I consider submitting them for research.

Jeff,
Forum members have engaged in exchanges of opinion regarding the likelihood of the Order of Glory having been awarded for post-World War II/Great Patriotic War feats of valor. I will only say that I have personally come across legitimate information to suggest there were indeed such awards. Regards, slava1stclass

You'll never really know until you get it researched. While the question of post-GPW Glory awards is, as "Slava" so wisely observes, "complex", other awards (RB, RS, MMM) are known for Czechoslovakia and UAR actions (some of these now live with me). I suspect the recorded awards of the "Order of Glory" for Afghanistan are, in fact, the PDRA award of that name and not the Soviet one.

desantnik Wrote:I'm willing to bet 99% these are catch-up awards or given for wounds. I tend to agree with Paul on this one. Out of the 60 odd Glories I own I have researched at least half a dozen within the number range in question and have found that they have been given for actions during GPW. Though having said such I still have a couple within the suggested number range that haven't been researched and who knows what they could turn up:confused: Odds are though that 99.9% of OGs given in that time period are catch ups or for wounds, I would love to be proven wrong here though;) Regards Brendan:thumbsup

I was just cruising through this thread when I thought I might raise some points again since it's been awhile since this thread has had discussion.
Inflation on Soviet medals has effected many, collectors and dealers alike. Does demand out strip supply? I don't think so, depending on what you are looking for. If you are after a cross section of Soviet Orders they are available at what I believe is reasonable prices for 2007. It does pay to ask questions and shop around to get those good deals;) Example being that by cruising the Australian E site I came across a OGIII for a buy it now price of $50, being sceptical at such a price I bought it anyhow expecting it to be a fake. As it turned out I was able to pick it up and the guy lived 10 minutes from where I work. I picked it up and surprised to see it was genuine and I rated it a 8 out of 10 for condition. The gentleman and I got talking and I revealed that I only collect Glories. He asked me did I want any more:rolleyes: I went inside and he produced 9 OGIIIs that I rate 9 out of 10. I walked away from the meeting with 10 OGIIIS for $500AUD. So the deals are there you just need to look and be lucky at times:) Of course dealers need to make money, that's why they are in business, I have found that a mix of auction sites and dealer use works for me. I am willing to take risks that I might get a fake but that's my call. Overall the increase in price for Glories (specifically III Class) over the last 12-18 months has remained consistent and certainly not over the top. As far as second class and first class goes, keep in mind that there was not that many issued in comparison to third class so the price is likely to reflect that. So...just my thoughts for the day:D Regards Brendan

Brendan, A few years ago (3 1/2 to be accurate), I was buying these at $10 a piece; that is a 500% price increase! It sure beats any bank deposit :D Point is, if you only recently entered the field, prices on low end material may seem to be somewhat reasonable. However, if you've been here for a bit longer, they simply have gone through the roof, without necessarily any real justification (before everyone rips me to shreds over my last statement, I am only talking about the common, low-end stuff here). I agree with your comment. Having only been collecting for 18 months, my view is only over that period of time. As collector and not an INVESTOR, if I want a particular piece I will do what I can to secure it for my collection. Sometimes the head cashes what the pocket can't:D Brendan

Sometimes the head cashes what the pocket can't:D Brendan, That's true, as a collector I have way too often purchased items for my many collections at exhorbitant prices. I am much more interested in their historical than monetary value. But still, when it comes to selling some of them (to make money for better specimens) it's nice to know that your investment has appreciated, isn't it ;) Alexei |
