Guards Badges
meyerse Wrote:This one is clearly post war, but any idea on era? I suspect the screw post is a replacement? It has a funny orange sheen to it, I think it is dirty in some way. It seems to be brass or a brass alloy, similar in heft to my wartime ones, but flatter with less curvature. Again, what era do you think?

According to AVERS 8 this design was introduced in 1950. From my experience the early (ca. 1950-1960ish) badges tend to be of equal quality to the 1942-1950 badges. I reckon you've got yourself a nice early badge. The manufacturer's mark is an early Pobeda Factory Moscow trademark, which seems to support my opinion. Whether the badge is vaulted or flat is strictly at the discretion of the manufacturer. It is indeed a nice badge.

Happy Collecing,:thumbsup

All are the same type but have two type screw plates: big by Moscow "Artel Photo" and small numbered(!) Monetni Dvor plates.

VERY NICE!! You are indeed fortunate to have made such a 'find'. WELL DONE! Any chance of you posting a nice, clear, close-up photo of the markings on the nuts? Are there any manufacturer's marks on these badges?

As all wartime badges doesn't have a maker mark on badge itself but nuts have. I'm sure that badge manufacturer is different to screw plates maker.
Small plates were standart made by State Monetny Dvor, but big plates - by private Artel Photo from Moscow (you can see Artel's name on screw plate)

The manufacturers' trademarks shown below are from a list of "Soviet Russian Metal Order, Decoration, Medal, and Badge Manufacturers and Mints Trademarks". Numbers 1 & 2 are, of couse, the earlier and later trademarks of the Moscow Mint respectively. Numbers 3, 4, and 5 are for the Pobeda Factory Moscow, "Earlier Version", "Later Version", and "Latest Version", respectively. If One were to speculate as to the meaning of "Earlier", "Later", and "Latest" in this context these terms could, perhaps, mean; "Earlier"= 1942-1960, "Later"= 1960-1980, and "Latest"= 1980-1991.

Please: Comments:confused::idea

Thanks for the close-up of this nut. How about a similar photo of the other nut? Thanks.

is the screw post original or a replacement?

Also, it looks like it might have a thin layer of shelack on it that has yellowed? It has a slight orange tint to it, any ideas?

I agree. That seems a reasonable assumption.

Jim,
the document that you show is from a book on the badges of Komsomol.
During the war the factory Pobeda badges are marked only on the "Gaika.
This mark is for the 60/70, the Pobeda manufactured a series
includes the dates 67 / 68 / 69 as below .

Regards
Dom

So is the screw a replacement on the one I posted? The screw has a smaller diameter than the wartime badges I have for sure.

Can anyone identify the decade this Guard's badge was made, as well as any other information about it?
