Nota Bene Wrote:Eric,
It has a small star, so at least mid-1950 and later. Alexei
I should have thank you for that confirmation.
Please pardon my lack of politeness.
Attached are images of the badge I got today. Looks like an older one.
Anyone care to comment?
Another question I have is the black gunk on the reverse. Is this Soviet issue gunk or something else? :D
Thanks in advance :clapclap
I decided to try some of Dr. Erik's patented gunk removal creme on this badge.
It worked pretty well....revealing a nice mirror reverse.
PS. meant to ask, is the screwplate correct?

Thanks Marc.
I was hoping it'd be WW2 era so I could display it with all my WW2-era ODMs.
The guy also had a half dozen otlichniks (sp?) that looked old. I'm debating on wether to grab them or not.

I show a quote from a Russian associate who seems to know a bit about these:
"1. banner has no fringe and has hyphens all over it, - surely ww2
2. Banner has a badly visible ornament at the lower and upper borders and has hyphens all over it - surely ww2,
3. Banner has fringe but also has hyphens - ww2, but also may be postwar early mod,
4. Banner has no hyphens all over it, but has slightly visible folds and a fringe, - postwar or so called transitional mod,
5. Banner has fringe and covered with curved lines (curved folds) - surely postwar.
The postwar badges usually contain a mark on the reverse side - a small circle or hexagon with a letter inside - the mark of Pobeda factory or other factory, issued the badge."
It's a little bit more complicated than that - there are at least 90 known variations of the Guards badge, produced at different times and by different factories. The only thing I can tell for sure about Ruiz's badge is that it was made before 1950.
Here is my new Guards badge. I bought this at the weekend at our big UK event, the "War & Peace show". It was priced at 30 Euro but the dealer let me have it for £5 or $10.
Nice early one, in nice shape. Interesting screwplate as well.
Often, at least in my limited experience, they have brassy plates with manufacturer info on them. Yours seems to be an early Order's plate.
Great price BTW, I think the early ones can go as high as $50(?).
