This is tough to make a guide for; flags that were awarded to units from other organizations were not bound by any real regulations; so, we'll simply post examples here...if you have them (please, only flags awarded to military units; any era is ok), post them!
This is one of my favorite flags...i bought it back in 1993, then sold it to a client up north...just bought it back...it was found after the Vyazma battle ( i think that was the area) on the body of a dead Red Army man..it was in very bad shape, and was sent to the Red Army museum later on where a basic restoration was done. It was then on display for quite some time (you can see the sun stripe fading)...awarded by the Komsomol to an Artillery unit (number of unit has been removed; i think later, to hide its origins, not battle damage).
This is a really amazing soviet flag in that its an awarded unit flag, from the the workers of the Vazevo District (or so) of the Stalingrad Oblast to the 855th Rifle Regt.
It clearly was awarded during the war, during or close to the Stalingrad battle. The flag is made from parts of older civilian award flags!

This is a really interesting award flag, awarded to a Komsomol youth unit in 1966.The quality is very high, on par with that of an early postwar unit flag. Shows some wear, but a great flag. I know I stated only military award flags but its such a nice example and made like a military flag that I had to post it.
The front simply states the 'All-Union Lenin Communist Youth", or VLKSM
Rear states: Passing on 'Red Banner' of the Voronezh Regional Committee of VLKSM For the High Production Figures in the 1966 Harvest
I do not think this is a unit flag being paraded in front of this unit in 1944; I think it might be a unit award flag, perhaps following the actual unit flag. Difficult to say.
