How To Store And Display Awards.
I, too, am proud of my service tomy country. It's a family tradition. Every branch of service except Coast guard and Merchant Marines are represented in my family. I had my dads medals mounted in a nice display box. I am working on mine now. As for the medals I collect I try to get them in display cases as I can afford to. I'm buying another case tomorrow. I agree 100% that medals are to be displayed and not packed away somewhere.

I've found this small frame at the local craft store for 99cents. Add a piece of felt drill a hole. The frame comes natural so frame color is up to you to finish. Anyway, It's a quick, easy and painless way to display your single orders and medals.

Sorry, about the picture quality. It's time to invest in a new digital camera.

Here's a better shot. My camera has no zoom so close-ups are lousy.:angerr

Just after Christmas 2005 (after Christmas Sale), I went to our local (National Chain) store that sells pottery, plastic flowers, seasonal decor items. I loaded my buggy with painted glass orniments of various sizes. One of the store associates was making small talk and commented on the beautiful orniments and how nice they looked. She was shocked when I told her I was going to throw them away, I just wanted the cool plastic display box they came in.

The boxes are ideal for one, two or three medals. I believe they were $1.49.

My project for this spring (even though it's already 90 degrees here) is to re-display my Soviet O&Ms.
Image 1 is the mess that I have now.
Images 2 & 3 are what I got today for the new display. I got two 16(inch) by 20 hinged glass display cases. These were $30 each at Michaels, minus a 30% sale discount. I also got a small length of cloth at JoAnn Fabric close to a Soviet uniform color. This stuff was 75% off so I spent 4 bucks on that.
As things progress I'd like to update this thread with new images of my work in the hopes that some may find it interesting or helpful.

I bought this on eBay today. I'm gonna frame it with my DoL medal and the award document. I think it'll make a nice display.

Eric, Do you have any themes in mind? Before you mount your medals, be sure to test serveal configurations. You have a great GPW Campaign collection. You have post soviet medals and several labor medals. I have tried to do the themes with my medals. You had mentioned you liked the Soviet train in my BAM display, what do you have that will pull a focus on a display? I think your October Revolution Plate should be the center piece of an October Revelution display.

Just looking at your medals makes my heart beat fast! Keep us posted.

Good point OOG. Actually I *have* considered seperating labor medals from military medals. I've also pondered seperating the gallantry awards from the campaign medals. Would that I had the resources to do that.
I bought those two frames with the idea of making my Soviet awards more aesthetically pleasing but I also have a big box of Imperial German awards that need the same 'housecleaning'....

I couldn't agree more!

Eric,

I think whatever you do, it will be excellent to give the awards more display space - better storage for them and even better presentation for you! :thumbsup

Keep us posted on your progress.

Eric,
Great spring project. The craft store I refer to for my displays is Michael's. I use the instant shadow boxes on the same aisle. The 30%-40% discount weekly is nice. I look forward to seeing your finished display.:thumbsup :thumbsup
