Military And Civil Awards Of The Democratic People's Republic Of Korea.
#1
Just in, a very VERY nice New Year's gift (to myself):

Warren E. Sessler and Paul D. McDaniel, Jr., Military and Civil Awards of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) ([Henderson: Sessler Incorporated, 2009]; ISBN 0-615-28482-5).

This book has, almost exactly, the feeling of the venerable "Red Bible" on Soviet awards, the McDaniel and Schmitt opus The Comprehensive Guide to Soviet Orders and Medals. This is perhaps not accidental, given that McDaniel is Sessler's co-author. As that book became the standard work on Soviet awards, this book will, almost immediately, fill that role for North Korean awards and, as the first work created Soviet phaleristics in the West, this is likely to do the same for DPRK awards.

All I can say is: WOW! Full 8-1/2 x 11 inch page size, 406 pages, detailed images in full color, pictures of recipients, etc., etc. Drool!

At $125 (plus shipping) it is not a cheap book, but it is a necessary book. Get it from the author at: Sessler Incorporated, PO Box 778426, Henderson, NV, 89077-8426. They seem to have no web presence and this book is not (yet?) on Amazon.com, so this may hurt their sales. It may be that The Familiar NJ Dealer in Soviet Awards will be selling it; we can only hope.

Yes, having seen the proofs this blows away anything published to date.

Good news ! I hope we finally learn from where come all the awards we find today on the market.

Two books on DPRK awards in a relatively short period of time. How do these two compare?

The Sessler and McDaniel is a serious and professionally researched volume. There is no comparison to anything else out there.

Over 400 pages of information and colored photos. This book is (will be?) without equal.

The more I dig around in it the more I value this book! Whether you collect PDRK awards or not, it is a joy for the knowledge addict.

The prmary author gives a book-specific e-mail address in the book and while I won't post it without his permission (I have asked), I'll share it if you drop me a PM.

Do this book include Kim Il Sung lapel badges? I am a collector of them and I find it hard to get an overview... Lots of fakes out there, but that's not my problem, as I know how to identify them, but I'd like a guide to different types.

My prime object is the one with both Kims dressed in uniforms. I guess it's very rare and I payed 50 dollars for it.

Usually they go for a lot less than that...
There's nothing in the streets
Looks any different to me
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye
And the parting on the left
Are now parting on the right
And the beards have all grown longer overnight

The Who, Won't get fooled again
