By todays enviromental protection awearness standards it may seem strange that the GDR had a ministry and an Enviromental Minister a full 15 years before the BRD which was established on June 6th, 1986 in response to the Chernobyl disaster and formed from departments of the Ministries of the Interior, of Agriculture and of Health.
The Ministry for enviromental protection and water management of the GDR was established in 1971.
