I have heard or read of something similar in the U.S., some guy "borrows" awards from veterans in order to do something, and returns fakes or similar. Maybe someone can add some info?

Patrik-

That happened here in my local area. Many retired senior officers live in this area. This fellow was going around and saying he was going to frame the awards for the officer. He would then go and take the original medals, swap them out with modern production awards, and give them back to the recipient.. He was finally cought when he was trying to sell a four-time Navy Cross and Medal of Honor recipient's Navy Cross at auction (the recipient later got back his medal.) Unfortunately, before that, he had sold dozens and dozens of medal groups for several years.

By the way, he served prison time, paid a fine, and is now buying US medals on eBay. Rolleyes

The scam is not new at all in Russia. Similar ones were done in the past.
