Ciao!
I purchase these two GPW's together. Of course they are the 85 issue. Still I have enormous difficulties in recognizing the 1st class from the second... they both look the same to me.
I am interested in hearing your opinions. Thank you

Probably the one on the left is 1st class? Yeah, I've had those problems as well. But, I seem to think the reverse of the 1st classes usually have a nice gold wash to them.

Correct, EricFG. If you look at the two badges together, you can figure which is 1st class.
On the reverse, the 1st class has some faint traces of gold (brass?) and again it is difficult to distinguish the two. I am glad to hear I am not the only one with this problem.
I thought the gold wash, as you say, on the 1st class should have been much more evident.
Just for completeness, pictures of the rear side of the two GPW badges. The picture on the left is the 1st class.
It all depends on how the order was stored; some retain their full gilt, others look like 2nd classes.
Technically speaking, the mint made only one type of orders, then simply electro-plated the first class; the problem is that, due to some chemical reaction, this very thin layer of gilt tends to evaporate into the silver after some time (this happens also to other orders such as the Order of the October Revolution).
I was just wondering if anyone could tell me serial number ranges for pre 1985 ogpw 1st and 2nd class orders. I spotted one on a list with the number 1231404 and I'm thinking is an early 85 but thought it could be a late issue also. I have asked for pics but havn't got any yet.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Chris
