Hey Dolf, nice pic!
That's what the threads for ;) BTW I brought a new book by Vasili the other day the German title is Gardisten auf dem Weg nach Berlin, (Guards on the way to Berlin) I'm not sure if that is the title as one called The fall of Berlin in English by him. I haven't started reading it yet though. I'll let you know how it is when I've finished it. Eddie.

Hi Eddie,
Before "Berlin-The Downfall", by A. Beevor (a kind of "other side" of the story, I find him a bit too hard in his critics against the Soviets) that I'm reading now, I've read "The end of the third reich" by V. I. Chuikov. Nice one. His disagreements with some of Zukhov's decisions are pretty obvious on this one. Apparently they didn't like each other much :) But I haven't got Chuikov's "The fall of Berlin" yet. There are two other titles from Chuikov, it seems they are called "The Battle for Stalingrad" and "The beginning of the road" in the English translation, which I don't have either. I believe that the one you have is probably "The beginning of the road" version in German. Anyway, please let me know what you think when you read it. Thanks a lot. Dolf

I saw this picture in the book 'Soviet Aces of World War 2" and was wondering if anyone could help ID the order on the far right.
The caption in the books state that both gentleman are volunteer soviet pilots during the Spanish cvil war. Could the award be Spanish ? Thanks Mark

Hi Mark,
chances seem good that it is a Spanish award, however after having a quick look at the Spanish medal sites that I know I was unable to find it. I'll have another look later. Eddie.

I´d say that´s a Mongolian Award... The RB for Military Valor I believe it´s called.
I´m 100% sure it´s Mongolian.

I had a quick look around on the internet at Mongolian awards and I think this is the award you are talking about it's the Order of the Red banner of combat type 1. Mark

Mark,
there wasn't actualy very far to look for this one, the pic of the award is in the Soviet Bloc section Mongolia as well. http://www.soviet-awards.com/forum/showt...php?t=3622 The Soviet Bloc section is becoming very extensive and it's well worth a look if you find the time. Your pic is the Order for Military Valor, Type 2 with the large star at the top Eddie.

Eddie/Taz,
Thanks, I looked at the below link which has it listed as a Red Banner http://users.skynet.be/hendrik/eng/39Mongolia.html I have also found another couple of sources on the internet it is a red banner of combat t1. I have PM you the other link to a dealers website. I was just thinking what an intersting career the pilot must have had to pick up such a collection or orders and serve in Spain. I would kill for that group! Mark |
