What branch of service insignia are on those boards?

It looks like his shoulderboards are thiner than normal. If it isn't just my imagination, it would indicate a medic or a lawyer (as general terms), of which the first alternative seems more probable.
But I may be wrong

The photo is not really much clearer in its original form. But I think it could be legal, with the shield and swords. But they still should have their medals on the side regulations tell them to have it on.
Lefthanded could be the answer. An other is that he pinned them on using a mirror.. :D Or perhaps he picked up some bad habits in China... /Kim

Cleber,
He is wearing the Soviet badge, not the new Russian one. Marc new world Wrote:Here's unusual photo - any opinions? It was a nice pic. I can´t relly see if the belt buckles are tsarist time or a special branch. I think the uniforms could be some military academy like suvurov school. If soo it explans the orders. Otherwise this guyes have just gone over to the red side in the early soviet days. My two kopeks. I guess I´ll be proved wrong soon ,but it´s fun trying. Best

William,
As both these guys are wearing Soviet Awards (ORB screwback it seems) I guess when the picture was taken they probably were on the side od the Reds for some time, in order to perform the deeds that explain the Awards, right? In that case it's indeed hard to understand why they were still using Tsarist uniforms! Unless they were part of some special Group who infiltrated the Tsarist side (the Whites, during civil war, right?) desguised with Tsarist uniforms, and the picture was taken right after the mission was accomplished! Or the pic was taken in the very early days of civil war and there was a lack of Soviet uniforms for everyone and they were allowed to dress in their former Tsarist uniforms! I really have no idea, just my two cents... Dolf

I think that the first soviet uniform model came in 1919. Before that the uniform could be a civil jacket with a red stripe. If these guys came back from the front in WWI it´s not strange that the wore tsarist uniforms before there came a soviet type. Still it´s a very nice picture. I haven´t seen many with so clear transitional stuff as these are. Thanks for posting.
Tal No need to get upset and talk with capital letters. Just reply if you wish to the thread. Best
