Please help!!!
#1
Gentlemen,

I have a serious problem.
I stupidly tried to polish the stained rank stripes of a navy uniform with a metal polishing liquid, and it didn´t get any good results. The problem is, after 4 days, the brass thread became GREEN!!! how can I restore this stripe to their normal look???
Help me please!!!

:banghead: :banghead:I never polish nothing ever again!!!

What did you use to polish them? i don't know why they would turn green maybe you used a polisher for the wrong type of metal?

Probably a chemical reaction between the gold thread, the polisher and air. I think the sleeve stripes need to be replaced, I doubt they can be restored. Was it a parade uniform with rank stripes all around the sleeve or a service uniform with the stripes mounted in "shorter pieces"?

If it was stripe that goes all around the sleeve, I think a local army/navy supply store can sell you stripes that would look OK. It is pretty expensive though. If it is short pieces (service uniform) I have a supplier for such and you can send a PM.

Patrik,

I doubt that the gold in the thread is involved. Gold is mostly inert. I believe on the contrary that it is the brass/copper contained in the alloy that reacted with whatever product Esteban used.

I tend to agree that the stripes need to be replaced; I would however try to take them off and rinse them with water, then possibly try to brush them gently with soap. You never know, it might work, and since they are already in "an advanced state of preservation", there is little to be lost.

Lapa,

correct Smile Pardon my chemistry, I hated it in school. Too dangerous for me.

i used a type of chemical called Tarn-X (or something along those lines, don't know how to spell it) on brass and it ruined it. i was never really able to get it back to where it was. i am not sure that soap/water would have helped. i think they may be right Esteban, new ones may be your only option!

Thanks everybody for your help.
Well, they are on a service uniform (navy kitel) in small pieces, as Tretov said.
They were pretty hard to get(purchased separately)... How could I be so stupid!!!:banghead

I´ll try the soap/water. If not, I´ll contact Tretov´s man.

Thank you once again!

What rank is the uniform?

Captain 1st/2nd rank. The uniform came with 1st rank captain shoulderboards, but since I only found 2nd rank captain stripes and stars, I had to remove one star from each shoulderboard.

Here´s a pic :cry

Sorry to say this, but it looks like this has been transformed into trash.

What is so wrong with age and tarnish? Those of us with some of both are curious.
