Red Star.
I operate an industrial laser (amongst other things) I could try to cut the ORS shape out of a 1/8" thick piece of plexiglas. Cover the top piece with black velvet, cut another 1/8" piece for the bottom with screwpost holes lasered in the appropriate places and it's done. I could even laser engrave nameplates which could be affixed to the black velvet.

My desire is to create a larger shadow box with a black velvet tray with a depressed place for each star to rest with the back screwed on and a number below the star. The depressed area would be the size of the screwback with a hole for the extending screwpost. I can visualize it but not make it reality just yet. If and when I do and I am pleased enough with the result, I will be sure to post photos.

The only thing I lack is a deep frame. It needs to be able to minimally accomodate the thickness of an ORS, plus approximately 1/8"-1/4" for the backer board (what the award will attach to via the screwpost hole).

You could also try razor-cutting the shape in acid-free archive-quality cardstock, and use a similar spray adhesive to secure velvet or fabric to get that fitted depression, jewel box effect.

Just some thoughts from a fellow display addict:
After some experimentation I find lighter colored backgrounds preferable to dark because the medals are easier to see, especially in the poorly lit cave I reside in.
I like the idea of the depressed area in which to mount the order. My suggestion would be a circular cutout somewhere in the 50-55mm range for each ORS. I'm thinking a star cutout would be harder to cover with the fabric.
I like display frames that are accessible from the front ie. hinged. That way you can photograph without the glass reflection and you can remove an order easily for inspection.

Eric,
I now cut circles of yellow felt to back my Screwposts.

Best,

Is that the color of the yellow rose of Texas?

Jeff,
Yes it is!! I hadn't thought of that. It was the best looking felt available for what I wanted to do.

Guys - if you have documented or researched ORS that were awarded after December 1956, please let me know the number and Ukaz date so that I can add it to my database for my research. Thanks! :thumbsup :thumbsup
