Red Star.
Eric,
Think of it as more yellow as in the Hammer & Sickle on the Soviet Flag;)

ok, so I was tinkering with my stars over the weekend.

I went out and purchased several 1mm thick pieces of cardboard size 210mm - 310mm (slightly bigger than an A4 for Europeans).

Then I scanned in the front of one of my stars and cropped it to the edges of the star. In Adobe PageMaker, I created a page using the star, copied 23 times along with the guides.

Printing this out, I then attached it to my cardboard. Took a cutout of a star outline, I marked where the screwpost should be and drilled a hole for each star through the paper and cardboard.

After mounting each star (23 in total), I scanned it for the group here. If you want a custom layout, send me a PM and I will do one up for you and mail it to you as a PDF file.

The PDF file is the one I printed out and attached for proper alignment.

So now what? Frame it? What other options do we have besides sticking them on the wall?
Very nice BTW. :thumbsup I'm reminded of the star portion of the US flag.

I am new to this field of collecting so please bear with me...Please can anyone say if this was awarded to Naval personnel as well as army is it possible to know by any means other than the document that accompanied it? I assume the numbers on the reverse will only give an estimate of the year of the award and not the branch of military, so to be sure, I assume the order would have to be accompanied by its document which would show if it was naval and again I assume these to be rare (Naval)...Thanks in advance:confused:

Sovsubs,

Welcome to the Forum!

Award documents for orders will not tell anything about the branch. The only way to determine that is a research through the Russian MoD archives, but I understand that there are still problems researching Navy awards. I will wait for somebody in the know to tell more.

I don't know what the "this" is you are referring to since there is no photo or link. Unless you research the item by serial number which will run about $55-70 there is little chance of just telling by a serial number. A few members have incomplete lists of serial numbers. If your serial number came with in +/- 50 of a known Navy award, it would be safe to ASSUME its a navy award, but again, you wouldn't be 100% certain unless you research it by serial number.

Sovsubs,

I would not call a Red Star awarded to Navy personnel rare in any way. Red Stars were widely awarded to all branches of service, and at one time were the first long-service award.

Hello...In order that I can judge the rarity because I would like to purchase...does anyone have an ORS that has been researched and found to have been awarded to a submariner? Thanks in advance :thumbsup

I'm sure that there are some out there. Good luck with your sub award search. I've now focused my purchases and research to awards to medics.
