Hi,
feels like enamel is completely restored in this RED STAR. This type of patina on the order tells this. Otherwise original piece. It should have silver screwback plate!

It doesn't look to be too bad a replacement job on the enamel. I've got a couple under 1 million that look a lot rougher, including one in the 47,xxx range. Also, only two of my 30 or so Stars still had silver screwbacks. Those screwbacks got sold first I think, followed by the Star itself when the old guy passed.
I figure with a number as low as yours, you are looking at a guy who got his Star in early/mid 1943. He still had two years of war to go, so he's bound to have beat it up a bit. He then had to work pretty hard the rest of his life under a semi-rough system only to watch his pension disappear in the early 90's. Not bad overall that its still around today. I like a star like this much more than a pristine later one. It's got character.

Thanks for the replies.
I didn't know about the silver screwback plates before. I have a Order of the great patriotic war 1st cl #168xxx with a plate in silver. How long did they produce these?
I find it a bit strange that the silver part on the obverse is still in almost perfect condition even though it had to have all arms reenameled. Probably many explanations for this..

Have you looked at it under a black light? If the enamel glows (changes to a yellowish gunky color) then the ename has been replaced. I have a MZPP like that.

First half of 1945, possibly around May but as some guys will tell you here, they were not given in sequential order. Some were given out later than others.

Well, I did say my first and only Order of the Red Star as a title of this thread, but today I have bought another one. Serial number again should, I hope, place it in 1945. Number is: 1,598848.
I only have the sellers pics at present, but as soon as I get it I will post it here and add the serial number to the forum database.
Cheers, Ade.
