According to Paul's book "Echos of War" your medal could possible be for "Long Service" and issued in November, 1944.

I recently purchased this red star and was wondering how the missing section of enamel will affect it's value. Not looking to sell it, just wondering. Also... It's number 297,346. Any idea of it's date?
Thanks, Brian

Value depends on the person. Some see $10-12 in silver. Others see an investment that they hope will pay off in about 10-20 years as the value goes up. Still others see the value attributed to the action for which it was awarded.
Date? Possibly around September, 1943.

Thanks for your opinion on my ORS. I actually never thought about the silver value. I'm a member of the "value attributed to the action for which it was awarded" group you mentioned. :D
I also have access to purchasing another ORS, in the 6 digit range, with very similar damage. I just got another ORS with a 6 digit number... all enamel intact. :D

"Echoes Of War" - Paul J Schmitt (PG 116) gives a date of 30/8/43 for ORS 297,038. Gives you an idea of a possible time period for yours :thumbsup

ok, so that might be a bit over the top. Goes to show what happens when two people are bidding on something and puts in a huge number to try to win and ends up costing them more than they really wanted to pay.

I ended up with 5 Red Stars from my trip. I didn't pay more than $30 for any of them, including the 6 digit star. I also bought about 8 Order of the Patriotic War badges, and a few other assorted medals. Nothing like starting my collection off with a bang, eh?:D There is some great reading on this site. Thanks for the input of those that have replied too. This is a fun hobby!
